About me
My name is Monica Valdettaro. I work as a free-lance translator since 2003, when I finished the Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori (School for Interpreters and Translators) in Florence. I decided that I wanted to become a translator when I was 8, therefore I have attended a language school before graduating in Political Science at the University of Florence in 1998.
Qualifications
I am a trainee member of AITI (Associazione Italiana Traduttori e Interpreti - Italian Translators and Interpreters Association)
Education
After the high school I attended a language school, where I studied French, English and German. In 1998 I graduated in Political Science at the University of Florence (107/110); my dissertation was about Germany and the failure of the negotiations on the Fouchet plan - the first attempt for the political union of Europe. In 1999 I attended a course for teacher of Italian as a second language and from the year 2000 I attended the Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori in Florence, where I studied English and German. I finished the school in 2003 and my dissertations consisted in the tramslation of parts of two books - one from English and one from German - on sport and doping. I gaduated summa cum laude.
In 2005, I took part in the third edition of the Days of Literary Translation, organized by the University of Urbino (Italy) and in 2006 and 2007 attended a course on literary translation organized by NTL - Il Nuovo Traduttore Letterario (Florence).
Experience
In my four-year experience as a freelance translator I have worked on several kind of texts, mainly web-sites on tourism. I have also translated technical texts on wind energy, web-sites on dietary integrators and legal texts. Occasionally, I co-operate with Cystic Fibrosis Worldwide translating their quarterly newsletter. Lately, I have also translated several pages of a book on the soundtracks in Stanley Kubrik's films, which is to be published in Italy.
I have also worked as a speaker: in 2004 I was the speaker of the Xth FINA Master Waterpolo World Championships in San Marino; since autumn 2004 I have been the speaker in the matches of Rari Nantes Florentia women waterpolo team and in April 2007 I was the speaker of the LEN Women Waterpolo Champions Cup final in Florence.
Finally, since 1999 I give private English, German and French lessons to high school and university students.
Interests
I like reading very much and I always have a book in my hands.
I am also sport-aholic: I like any kind of sports, especially waterpolo, basketball, football. Since January 1998 I am a waterpolo judge for FIN, the Italian Swimming Federation.
